Second week update

It's only the first week of September, but we've already had two weeks of school! Can you believe it? The first week we had some wonderful opportunities to get to know each other and learn the changes at Kennedy!  We've navigated dismissal routine changes like a pro!

Everyone had a great time diving into the third grade curriculum.  We begun our (short) first topic in math about time.  Students learned how to tell time to the minute on an analog clock and how to determine elapsed time.  We practiced how to figure it out using an open number line. You can learn more about that here.

We also began working on building reading stamina, reading like a book is "gold," making good reading choices, and how to pick a just right book.  On Friday, students also learned how to keep track of reading on our class' reading log.

In writing, students practice story telling small moments to a partner.  As well they generated different ideas in their writer's notebook and made a "heart map."  Everyone is excited to get started with their first stories soon!

In Foundations, students had the opportunity to review closed syllables and they were introduced to a new concept of the letter "w" and "qu" altering the sound of "a" in a closed syllable in words like "wash" and "squash."  They also worked on sound alike "know vs no" and "which vs witch."

Lastly, in Science we've been learning about our solar system! It's been very exciting! So far we've talked about Mercury, Venus, Earth and Earth's moon.  We've discussed why we have seasons and begun talking about the phases of the moon.  The seasons and phases are a bit complex to comprehend, so we'll be reviewing and discussing these topics throughout the solar system unit. Please checkout the links on the right to review the topics we've covered!

I'm hoping at some point soon we'll have some time to take some pictures of our great learning.
